Fluid Collection Containers

Prior to collection of the fluid from the patient:

With sterile technique, place into the specimen container 10,000 units of sodium heparin for a 2L bottle. For all other collection containers use 3 units of sodium heparin per cc of specimen container capacity. If the collected fluid does not fill the container, the higher concentration of heparin will not harm the specimen. Fluid containers are to be transported in coolers to the lab.
