Patients using a home glucose meter to monitor blood sugar may have the meter evaluated to determine the accuracy of the results at the request of their physician. The patient must bring his/her meter and testing supplies to the collection site. With a physician order, the laboratory will collect a venous specimen at the same time that the patient does a fingerstick using his/her meter. The laboratory specimen is analyzed and compared to the patient’s meter result identifying whether the meter result is acceptable or unacceptable. A report of the Glucose Meter Check is sent to the ordering physician.
This laboratory service is available at all the laboratory collection sites during regular hours of operation. It is also available for inpatients.
